Deformity Surgery

As Op. Dr. Halil İbrahim Öçalan, we provide expert deformity surgery services in Gaziantep. Deformity surgery is an important subspecialty of orthopedics dealing with the diagnosis and treatment of congenital or acquired bone and joint deformities. Treatments in this field cover a wide range from correction of growth disorders in children to repair of post-traumatic deformities in adults.

Congenital Deformities

Bone and joint anomalies appearing during newborn period or early childhood. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent permanent functional disabilities.

Common Congenital Deformities

  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)
  • Congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot)
  • Congenital valgus/knus deformities
  • Knee joint congenital anomalies
  • Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease)
  • Congenital scoliosis

Treatment of Congenital Deformities in Children

Early conservative treatment methods (plaster casting, brace use) can eliminate surgical necessity in many deformities. When surgery is required minimally invasive techniques are preferred.

Recurrent Deformities

Bone healing disorders after traffic accidents, falls or trauma can lead to recurrent deformities. In such cases surgical repair may be necessary.

Causes of Recurrent Deformity

  • Malunion (incorrect healing) in bone fractures
  • Deformity after non-union
  • Bone loss after infection
  • Muscle imbalances due to neurological diseases
  • Rheumatological diseases (rheumatoid arthritis)

Bone Curvatures and Correction

O-leg (varus) or X-leg (valgus) curvatures in legs can lead to functional disorders and chronic pain. In such cases deformity can be corrected through osteotomy (bone cutting and realignment).

Osteotomy Procedure

  1. First detailed examination and X-ray imaging are performed.
  2. Patient's age, bone maturity and degree of deformity are evaluated.
  3. If needed 3D planning is done for preoperative preparation.
  4. Osteotomy site is fixed with plates and screws.
  5. Early mobilization programs initiated.

Growth Plates and Growth Disorders

Bone growth in children occurs through epiphyseal plates (growth zones). Injuries or diseases in these areas can lead to growth disorders. Early surgical intervention may be required for repair of growth plates.
