Arthroscopy Surgery (Shoulder, Knee and Ankle)

Arthroscopy Surgery
As Op. Dr. Halil İbrahim Öçalan, we provide expert arthroscopy surgery services in Gaziantep. Arthroscopy is one of the minimally invasive (closed) surgical methods used for diagnosis and treatment of joint diseases. In this method, a camera (arthroscope) and special surgical instruments are inserted into the joint through small incisions, allowing detailed visualization of joint structures and necessary treatment.
What Is Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopy is a modern diagnostic and therapeutic method that allows direct visualization of intra-articular structures. Compared to traditional open surgery, it requires much smaller incisions (typically 0.5-1 cm). Through arthroscopic methods, patients benefit from less pain, faster recovery, and quick return to daily life.
Knee Arthroscopy
Knee arthroscopy is a modern surgical method used for diagnosis and treatment of many conditions affecting the knee joint. Cartilage damage, ligament injuries, and meniscus problems in the knee can be treated with arthroscopic methods.
Applications of Knee Arthroscopy
- Meniscus tears (medial and lateral)
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
- Knee cartilage damage (chondral and osteochondral lesions)
- Intra-articular loose bodies (joint mice)
- Knee pain and movement restriction
- Synovitis and inflammatory conditions
Advantages of Knee Arthroscopy
Limited incisions mean less pain, lower infection risk, short hospital stay (typically same-day or next-day discharge), rapid rehabilitation, and early return to sports.
Shoulder Arthroscopy
Shoulder arthroscopy enables closed treatment of injuries and diseases affecting the shoulder joint. Through arthroscopic surgery, problems in the shoulder joint can be treated with smaller incisions.
Applications of Shoulder Arthroscopy
- Shoulder dislocations and recurrent instability
- Rotator cuff tears (partial and full-thickness)
- Shoulder impingement syndrome
- Shoulder cartilage damage
- Shoulder ligament injuries (glenolabral lesions - SLAP, Bankart)
- Biceps tendon pathologies
Advantages of Shoulder Arthroscopy
Small incision scars, less pain, preservation of shoulder range of motion, rapid rehabilitation, and early return to daily activities.
Ankle Arthroscopy
Ankle arthroscopy is a modern surgical method used for diagnosis and treatment of injuries and diseases affecting the ankle joint. This method provides effective results especially in sports injuries and chronic ankle pain.
Applications of Ankle Arthroscopy
- Ankle ligament injuries (lateral ligament complex)
- Cartilage damage (osteochondral lesions)
- Ankle impingement syndrome (anterior or posterior)
- Intra-articular loose bodies
- Chronic ankle pain
- Synovitis and infection conditions
Advantages of Ankle Arthroscopy
Less pain, rapid healing, early weight-bearing allowance, no extended hospital stay, aesthetic results (small incision scars).
Arthroscopy Process
- Preparation: Detailed examination, X-ray and MRI for diagnosis. Patient suitability for surgery is evaluated.
- Anesthesia: General, spinal, or regional anesthesia is applied. The patient is fully anesthetized or numbed from the waist down.
- Surgical Procedure: Arthroscope and instruments are inserted into the joint through 0.5-1 cm incisions. Intra-articular structures are visualized on monitor; if needed, treatment is applied (meniscus repair, ligament reconstruction, cartilage correction, etc.).
- Post-operative: Incision sites are sutured, sterile bandages applied. Patient is taken to recovery room.
Who Is Suitable?
Arthroscopy surgery is recommended for: Mechanical symptoms in joint (locking, catching, giving-way sensation), chronic joint pain not responding to conservative treatment, sports injuries, young and active patients, those requiring quick return to daily life.
Complications
Arthroscopy surgery is a safe procedure but some complications can occur: Infection (<1%), bleeding, nerve injury (usually temporary), blood clot formation, anesthesia-related complications. These risks are at minimal levels.
